[After two days of yelling into pillows and distractedly drawing offensively grumpy caricatures of robots on doodle paper on his desk before his guilt starts feeling very much like a real creature gnawing through his body:]
I'm sorry for upsetting you.
I didn't mean anything by it.
I just get excited and say stupid shit without thinking much.
[ Drift was driving into that last conversation with the dented bonnet of his fresh grief snd old horrors. It was when Newt reached out that Drift realized how much he had been projecting. ]
Thank you.
I know how wanting to help can get misinterpreted.
( 'Meet me outside the simulation room, first thing' was what Leonard made sure to tell Drift at the bonfire last night, refusing to say anything more on the subject. Aside from, y'know, assuring him his gift wasn't some horrifying human dessert that could double as a brick.
Bones got there well in advance, checked a few settings to be sure yesterday's Christmas spectacle hadn't inadvertently filtered over, and paced the room outside as he waited. )
[ The unmistakable invitation had been rolling through Drift's head the rest of the night. Making enough of a racket of second guessing knocking around with his own anxiousness it was any wonder he nearly recharged through his alarm.
There is a loud screech of tires as Drift slides on the heels of his feet into the hall leading to the simulation room. He didn't drive over- he learned his lesson the last time. But if he breaked hard enough on his heels (like, for instance, running in the halls to make it to a friendly not-date on time) it made a bit of noise. ]
( So it's midday-ish, Bones is checking in on the 'bots, and decided they were both looking a bit worse for the wear, in light of their environment. That's it, that's the thread. It occurs to him maybe five minutes later, as he's shaking out his cloth, a hand to Drift's side, that he probably should have given him a heads up first, whoops: )
Sorry if this feels weird, you were covered in hay, horsehair and alfalfa dust.
[ Being in two places at once is a complex, mentally taxing endeavor. To spare himself the headache, Drift put his true body in a semi-conscious, low power mode. Megatron described it as sleepwalking, but Drift was more adept at moving around like this.
What he absolutely was not familiar with was sitting in the saloon fine one minute, only to abruptly break out into a full body shudder and stifling a moan the next. Heads swiveled in his direction as the ordinarily taciturn 'Borislav' was fidgeting in his seat, overwrought.
The minute he could sneak away, Drift retreated to the barn. The closer he got the more he regained full awareness and registered the thoroughness of Bone's touch. ]
It's not weird.[ Drift spoke up behind Bones as the suspiciously purr-like thrum of his engines carried over to his human guise as looking noticeably flushed and weak in the knees. ]
[ When the realms start to break apart with each additional portal that bridges Sedorum to Taeum, it brings with it just one more layer of chaos the people here quite frankly can't sustain.
The Doctor helps where he's needed — it's what Entr'i had called him (and Clara) for, after all — swiftly moving in to usher children and the weak and elderly out of harm's way. He finds ways to get them to areas where the architecture around them isn't crumbling, where the ground is the steadiest, where they might have clean(er) water and warm blankets to ride out this battle.
What he doesn't expect is to be pursued by some unknown presence in the midst of all this chaos, though he has felt rather ... off all afternoon, like there were trained eyes on him. ]
What? [ He exclaims upon just barely dodging one arrow-head aimed in his direction. People making attempts on his life aren't exactly uncommon; you nose your way into enough conflict, making rather quippy (and sometimes rude) remarks along the way, and a Dalek or a Cyberman might want to see you dead.
But here? Had someone seen him speaking with Entr'i? ] What?
[ Before the planned push into Taeum, Drift had made it a priority to help where he could. Although he didn't like to think as much, the group that had been imprisoned were arguably safe. Safer in a cell there then in the chaotic streets of a crumbling Sedorum.
Once he had convinced the more vunerable to be ferried in his alt mode, it was mostly playing the waiting game. This wasn't the first time he could best contribute to a battle keeping the innocents caught in the crossfire safe.
Even with his less exciting post, Drift refused to allow complacency. This proved to save not just his own hide, but someone else's. One moment, he was escorting a small group into a building.
-the next he was blocking an arrow with his forearm. The speared tip had run clean through with most of the shaft embedded in the now flickering and glitching limb.
Intercepting it had been instinct, Drift hadn't even known who he had saved before turning. Turned out, it was the least likely target of assassination. ]
[ in truth, it really does take her a long time to get around to texting him because she's trying to use the interface to attach a network post to her message. ]
I've been wondering something. Why would someone need to learn how to operate one of these conveyances while you're immobilized, specifically?
[ she’s been drinking, clearly, if the lack of punctuation is any indication. she’s also irritated enough that their inquiries about the orb had been met with no real evidence, which had led to the drinking in the first place — and now, tipsy contact. ]
[ Drift has had the exciting pleasure in a short amount of time of rushing through the very colorful and multifaceted tapestry with interwoven layers that is: Kinds Of Smashed Yennefer Is. Right now? He's reading between the lines and hearing beeps you only get on geiger counters when it's time to clear the area. ]
( After poking around a dead guy and delivering the grisly details to the rest of the crew, Leonard needs a drink. Or two. Something, anyway, as he sets off toward one of the innumerable bar cars on the train.
It's a long hike. He's just also so distracted, he barely notices he's about to walk into the other man until they almost collide. )
My apologies, excuse me- ( he does sound apologetic, at least, though his worn expression lights up to see a familiar face. )Drift!
[ Drift had had actually been firing on all cylinders since the journey began. Try as he might, after knocking a few back with the Darkling, organic-based alcohol wasn't doing it for him. Just as well, perfectly clear-eyed and alert, Drift threw his hands out and caught the body careening towards him by the shoulders. ]
Leonard! [ Drift called out with genuine delight — like he had been looking forward to this and that there wasn't a carcass a few cars down. ] I just got your announcement, are you alright?
[ yet another flyer ends up on every orber's door, evidently by the same culprit as last time, except now it's a more colorful display:
the back of the flyer features more details about the play and its characters, and soon enough, an announcement from rita herself goes public, giving more context about the event, which all can sign up for. ]
Delivered to Drift's door is a Christmas stocking. Unlike most, his does have a note, written in looping cursive and slanted left. I had the bright idea to get little things for my friend. Turns out, I don't have a lot of ideas what to get when those friends are giant robots. Consider this a placeholder until I can come up with better. - R
[On Christmas day, Drift receives a gift symmetrically wrapped in while and silver gift paper. Inside are protective sword sheaths, all the better to keep them from damage and to make sure that Drift is always safe when handling them.]
